The Unforgettable Memorable First Day Of Work
Ryan Giffen
"I really wonder if our boss cares about us or just needs us to fill a slot."
"My first day consisted of being thrown into my desk, answering phones and "trying" to help customers...I felt like a failure!"
The above quotes are actual statements taken from employees whom I've encountered over the years. These employees made these statements during their exit interviews and told me, "no more!" The Average Turnover of an individual hourly employee is Apx. $2500. This number will never be found on a P&L Statement or within the company budget. However, each year, companies loose millions of dollars as a result of turnover. This turnover could perhaps be correlated to the employee's first day on the job. Many organizations don't emphasis or invest in the employees first day of work. As a result, they feel like they have failed themselves through the frustration and anxiety that is apparent on their first day.
Psychologically, employees DEMAND to: Feel Valued; Be Successful; do their jobs correctly; Meet company expectations. For this to occur, Supervisors and Managers must make the employee feel Welcome, Confident, and Important on their first day of work! Just like customers, employees form first impressions about your organization!
The reality is this: Employees are nervous on their first day of work, yet very excited to be working for you. You must capitalize on this!! Through their enthusiasm and excitement, your bottom line will increase! And at the end of the day, your boss will want to know, "How did you help the bottom line today?" And your answer, "By making the employees first day of work memorable and unforgettable!"
